The Art of Walking in High Heels
High heels are stylish, elegant, and perfect for any season, but they can be hard to walk in if you’re not used to them. You might feel unsteady and worry about falling. Luckily, Sandra has some really great tips on how to walk in high heels, choose the right pair, and avoid pain. The party is saved!
Choose the right style and size
If you’re not used to wearing heels, don’t start with the highest or narrowest ones you can find. Instead, choose a shoe with a block heel—a low, sculpted heel that’s 5 cm or less. A wide, thick heel can also work well—it makes the shoe feel more stable. A shoe with a platform at the front is a good choice if you want to reduce the angle and pressure on the sole of your foot. Many people’s feet swell when wearing heels, so it might be a good idea to buy a half size larger to allow for a little extra room.
Avoid Pain
An evening in heels often leads to sore feet, but there are smart tricks you can use to reduce the risk of pain. For example, shoe stores carry various gel insoles that you can insert into your shoes. A forefoot cushion relieves pressure and absorbs shock, a heel cushion provides cushioning for the heel, and a heel grip reduces slippage at the back. There are also sprays that form a film on the foot, similar to a nylon stocking, and reduce friction. If the shoe feels slippery on the bottom—as heels often do—you can lightly sand the front part of the sole. This provides better traction and reduces the risk of slipping and falling.
How to Walk Gracefully
Now that you have the right shoes and plenty of knowledge, it’s time to start walking! Keep your gaze fixed straight ahead and walk in a straight line. Chest out, straighten your legs, and sway your hips slightly. Always let your heel touch the ground first. It’s important to take shorter steps than you normally do—they say that the higher the heel, the shorter the step.
There you go—now you're ready to show off your new heels and your stylish stride at the party!
